Global Data Size !!!

The size of data is rapidly increasing in the globe at a very high speed. The source of this data is generated from audio, video, text, images, e-mails, health records, sensor machines, social networks, scientific data, businesses, websites, applications, etc.

Over 3 billion people using the internet, and about 14 billion Internet-connected devices exist in the entire world which is about double of world population.

The followings happen each day:

  • 8.5 billion Google searches.
  • about 720,000 hours of video upload onto YouTube.
  • 1.98 billion People are logging into Facebook and connected with 125 million friends, uploading 350 million photos and posting 2.7 billion comments on Facebook only.
  • Google processes about 20 thousand Terabytes of data every day, so it translates into 144 different languages including Kurdish and supports a lot of services.
  • More than 500 million tweets are post.
  • Every day more than 252 thousand new websites are being created.
  • There are many other platforms and sources to create data out of the above-mentioned ones.

It has been reported that, in 2018 the number of Internet-connected-devices had more than tripled since 2012 and in 2022 it became 14.4 billion devices, and it is predicted that there will be about 29 billion devices that will work on the Internet by 2030.

By the end of 2003 humans created 5 Exabytes of data. 1 Exabyte is 1,000,000,000,000 Megabytes, or 1,000,000 Terabytes. But today, the same size of data is created in only 48 hours. In 2012, the data size reached 2.72 Zettabytes.

1 Zettabyte is 1000 Exabytes. The amount of data is estimated to increase by 40% each year, reaching about 16.8 zettabytes of data by 2017. And this amount is about 64 Zettabytes in 2020.

Which means that if average storage of a PC can store 500 Gigabytes, this requires approximately 128 billion computers to save all the data in the globe and previously, it had been taken around 10 years to decode a human genome. But due to rapid advancements in technology, now it is possible to have the same result within a week. Google alone had about one million servers worldwide by 2012 and the number raised to 2.5 million by 2016. According to IBM nearly 2.5 Exabytes of data are being generated every 24 hours. Statistics show that approximately 90% of the current data in the globe has come from the last two years. This amount is about doubling every two years.

We can get benefits from those data in both areas, economically and nationally such as Financial Services, Health Care Services, Medicine Services, Education, Banking, Location Information Services, Telecommunications, Media, etc. So, it can be said that data is very beneficial in all areas if it can be used in a good way.
